Bird spike adhesive is used to attach bird spikes to areas of a building where there is a desire to keep birds from roosting. Bird spikes are non-harmful plastic or metal barbs that keep birds from landing along edges, windows, roofing, or other areas of a building which might otherwise invite nesting. These spikes help protect property from mess and damage that might be caused by birds.

Bird spike adhesive can be used to install such spikes in place of screwing the spikes down. Adhesive can be a better choice than screws for areas where property owners do not want to alter or penetrate the surface. Since gluing the spikes down will not cause any break in the surface, there will be no possibility of water seeping through.

Adhesive is also a good choice for those who find hardware installation a challenge. Gluing the spikes into place may be easier for users who are not handy with a tool box or when the area where the spikes are being deployed is awkward to reach.

Bird spike adhesive is a bonding element much like the silicon used to caulk windows and doors. The glue is applied to the underside of a row of bird spikes which are then pressed firmly in place. The adhesive pushes through holes in the spikes, hardens as it drys, and bonds to the spike and the surface it is resting on.

The adhesive is most often applied using a gun-style applicator. This applicator is almost identical to most caulk guns on the market, so anyone having worked on home construction or maintenance should be familiar with using one.

When buying bird spike adhesive, individuals should be certain the glue will bond to the surface intended. The best adhesives are made to bond to metal, cement, glass, wood, tile, and other common construction surfaces. Most adhesives require the surface be clean and free from moisture prior to installation. Following all directions for the adhesive will ensure a complete and long lasting bond.

Birds are one of Mother Nature’s creations that everyone loves to see, as long as it’s from a distance. Unfortunately there are situations when our feathered friends decide to make their nest and flutter through life in your gutter or on your window sill. This is when the birdie is no longer scenic and becomes a pest bird.

Their noise levels may be disrupting and bird odors are many times intolerable, just the sight of bird droppings everywhere is unappealing. The feces can corrode metals, damage plastics and discolor paint. It is likely the first noticeable hindrance is that the bird nests block your gutters making them nonfunctional.

The mess nesting birds make of your home is only part of the problem, they carry diseases that are transmittable to humans. Some diseases that birds carry are West Nile virus and influenza; the passing of mites and ticks poses the threat of Lyme disease. Although everyone is susceptible to contracting a disease, young children and the elderly are more likely to be affected. Anyone with a weakened immune system because of another existing illness is also at higher risk.

Acting quickly is a skillful suggestion to eliminate the common problem of birds nesting in your gutters, eaves, and roof tops. Deterring pest birds before they become a huge problem is both economical and less toil. If the situation is not dealt with early, a professional clean-up is necessary to avoid the spread of disease, along with the fact that many of these birds are under federal protection and it is against the law to demolish an active nest.

The easiest and most effective way to handle a pest bird problem in your gutter is to install bird spikes. This is a proven method that does not deface the gutter and allows it to function with the spikes in place. Gutter spikes come in 2 foot long strips with three thumbscrews to each strip; an easy twist of each “c” clamp secures these stainless steel spikes in place to do their job. The spikes are not a distasteful sight, but successful in deterring pest birds as they do not want to nest in a bed of spikes. Bird spikes are removed from the gutter as quickly and easily as they are installed, and also aid with pest birds on docks, ledges, and canopies.

Birds have every right to be on our planet as does the human being; the idea is to discourage the bird without harm. A gutter spike does this while being a prompt resolution and portable product. A bothersome problem solved, the homeowner is content while following federal law and the beautiful bird lives on.

There are several different kinds of bird spikes such as plastic or stainless steel. If you want to make a purchase it is definitely important to consider the choices. However, stainless steel bird spikes are a much better choice than other materials such as iron or plastic. Though they each serve the same basic function, stainless steel trumps the other choices in terms of durability and quality.

When purchasing bird spikes, you naturally want to buy a product that will last and be the best quality possible. With stainless steel, you’re making a good purchase decision. Stainless steel is a popular choice when you want to build something to last. Here’s a few reasons why you want to consider buying a stainless steel bird spike.

Reason 1 – Stainless Steel Bird Spikes Don’t Rust

First of all, stainless steel bird spikes don’t rust whereas those made from iron do. This is an important consideration because chances are very good that you’ll want your bird spikes to last. Since rust is corrosive this means that the stainless steel product will last longer. Iron bird spikes will start to weaken because when something rusts, the iron starts to weaken. Stainless steel doesn’t have this problem.

Reason 2 – Stainless Steal Bird Spikes are Strong and Durable

One popular material for bird spikes is also plastic. However, it is important to understand that you should be wary of plastic if you are installing them it areas that are in direct sunlight all day. Stainless steel bird spikes are much better because they are a lot more durable in sunlight than plastic which can be rather flimsy when it gets hot. Plastic parts can crack and become structurally unstable with extended sun exposure over time. When you make the choice to use stainless steel bird spikes, you are buying a higher quality product.

Reason 3 – Stainless Steel Bird Spikes are Long Lasting

Another important point to make about stainless steel bird spikes is they they last a long time. We’ve already covered that they don’t rust like iron does and that they are a lot more durable than plastic. However, there are other factors to consider because in general, they just last longer than bird spikes made of other materials.

As you can see, stainless steel bird spikes are a great option and are much better over iron bird spikes and plastic bird spikes. Iron turns into rust when faced with the elements which ends up corroding the material. Plastic can break and crack fairly easily. Stainless steel is strong and durable and will last for years.

Bird spikes are a very useful mechanism for bird control. They keep unwanted birds such as pigeons from landing and nesting in areas and on surfaces where they do not belong. Even better, bird spikes keep birds away from a desired area without actually harming the bird. There are many ways to install bird spikes. The method you should use depends on where you want to put the spikes, the material they are to be installed on (such as brick or wood) and the size of the spikes.

Before installation, be sure to take a walk around the property and take note of all locations where unwanted birds are perched. If you have spikes in one or two locations, but other areas are open to pest birds, you will be doing little for bird control. Perch sites are most frequently found on anything that protrudes from a building, including balconies, windows, chimneys and poles.

After you’ve decided where you want to install the bird spikes, survey those areas so that you know how much space is required. A single row of bird spikes typically covers between 6 and 10 feet. If the area is very wide, you may have to install two rows of spikes, leaving a 2 inch gap between the rows. If the area is narrow, most spikes will allow you to cut one side of the spikes off, so that the row of spikes will fit easily on the narrow surface.

Don’t begin to install the spikes if you haven’t cleaned the area. Sweep off all debris, including leaves, dirt and nests. It may be helpful to spray a disinfectant on the area.

Bird spikes are made from a variety of materials, most frequently stainless steel or plastic. The material you use doesn’t matter too much, as long as they are thin enough to not support the bird’s weight. The spikes should also be close together so that the birds will not be able to fit through them.

If you are installing stainless steel or plastic bird spikes onto gutters, you will need to use gutter clips, which are available in most hardware stores. Clip the gutter clip to the spikes, and then clip those to the outer edge of the gutter. If you need to remove the bird spikes from your gutter, you should use a pliers to pinch the top of each clip and the spikes will come off easily. These clips can be used in other areas, such as ledges, where you think you will need to remove the bird spikes from time to time for tasks such as painting and cleaning. If you use clips to attach the spikes, you can still ensure bird control while having the flexibility of moving them. However, clips are much less stable than glue-down bird spikes, so if you do not expect to ever remove the spikes, you should glue the base to the desired surface. Instructions for glue-down methods of bird spike installation follow:

1. Apply a thin strip of glue to the base of the spike. You should use a 10 fluid ounce tube of quality glue for every 30 feet of bird control spikes.

2. Now apply the base of the spike to the desired surface and press down firmly. Check the back of the glue bottle for instructions on the amount of pressure and time needed to cement the bird spikes.

3. Continue steps 1 and 2 until all the problem areas are covered with bird control spikes.

If you are nervous about climbing onto a roof or other high area to install the bird spikes, feel free to call up a local handyman or roof cleaner. They will install the spikes wherever you want them for a small fee.

In this day and age, most everyone is concerned about the environment and the animals with which we share the planet. However, there will always be a need to control where animals go and to keep them from coming into contact with certain structures. Everyone likes for this to be done in a safe and humane way and this is where bird spikes come into the picture.

Certain birds, like pigeons, often choose to roost and nest on and around buildings. This is not only an annoyance for the person who own the building and those who use it, but it can also be dangerous to people’s health. A fungus called Histoplasmosis grows on bird droppings. In the course of cleaning the bird droppings from a building or grounds, the cleaner may breathe in the fungus, which can cause health problems. Now, instead of using traditional methods of controlling this problem, people can use bird pest control products such as bird spikes.

Bird spikes are devices which consist of small spikes that are mounted on a block or strip. The block or strip is then attached to a surface, such as a sign, roof, or window ledge, using nails or glue. The bird spikes are often made of either plastic or stainless steel and can be designed and marketed for particular species of bird, but they seem to be for all different kinds, as long as the spikes won’t support the weight of the bird or the bird can’t fit in between them. The spikes protrude outwardly to keep birds from being able to land and therefore, roost or nest on the building.

The bird control spikes are one of the most humane ways to keep birds off of buildings. In fact, bird spikes are recommended by many animal welfare organizations. This is a much better method than the use of avicides that are used to kill the birds. Aside from being inhumane, the chemicals used can get back in the groundwater, which could negatively affect humans and other animals. Another more cruel bird pest control option is to shoot and kill birds that cause damage to buildings or putting poison pellets out where birds eat to kill them.

We, as humans, love to watch wildlife, including birds and enjoy being in nature. Most of us want to protect animals and use humane bird control methods. This is why bird spikes work so wonderfully. They keep birds off of buildings and do it without harming or killing the birds. Bird spikes are better for people and birds.

There is a fine line between treating birds humanely and dealing with the unsightly messes they make and the damage they can do to homes, businesses, and other structures. This meeting of man and nature is what makes bird spikes so useful in deterring birds from cohabitating too closely with us humans. So where, and for what purpose, might someone need to install bird spikes?

Consider that you have birds nesting in your gutters. As first glance, this might not seem like much of a problem. It may even seem somewhat interesting to have a view into how they live, almost like a school science project. However, upon closer inspection you begin realize that their nests are blocking the flow of water to your downspout. Soon, water begins backing up inside the gutter, causing it to sag and pull away from the roof. Meanwhile, the overflow from the blockage is spilling over and accumulating beside your house or place of business, possibly causing interior and/or exterior water damage. Not a pretty picture is it? This could be the perfect opportunity to use a bird pest control product like bird spikes.

But what if it isn’t your gutters in which the birds are roosting or nesting. Roof peaks can be another favorite spot for birds to rest and recuperate. It is here that they can do damage to your roof, trim, and siding, as well as pulling at and destroying wiring and insulation to build their nests. This damage can be avoided however, with the use of bird spikes as a deterrent. While the birds are up there doing their business, they can also affect antennas, causing additional damage, creating costly repairs, and disrupting signals.

It isn’t always the damage done by birds though that can make areas potential candidates for bird spikes. Few things make for a bad day like being bombarded from above by bird droppings. Birds love to sit on girders, and while in some countries is good luck to be hit with bird droppings, it’s not something you want occurring frequently, and frankly, it can be embarrassing. Speaking of embarrassing, if you are a business owner, having your sign being obscured or important information related to your business being blotted out by bird droppings can be annoying and give the impression of neglect and unhygienic conditions.

However, what if the presence of birds is more of a nuisance than anything else? When birds choose your office ledge as their resting spot, the noise they create can cause loss of concentration and irritability. Even worse, if they decide to roost upon your bedroom windowsill, their early morning singing or cooing can result in loss of sleep. Not only this, but admit it, bird droppings can be embarrassing and give a bad impression. Whether on ledges, windows, or on your fence, their smears and splatters can diminish the overall curb appeal of your home or place of business, which can cost you customers and money, or if you are trying to sell your home, can turn off prospective buyers. By using bird strips though, you can avoid these types of situations in a humane and cost effective manner.

There are many different types of bird control spikes. These spikes are designed to detour seagulls, pigeons, crows and vultures from landing on buildings and signs. Bird spikes can be designed with either all plastic or all metal materials. Bird spikes are also available in combination’s of metal spikes with a plastic base or plastic spikes with a metal base.

The decision to go with a combination spike/base or an all metal, or all plastic spike/base is completely up to the person who is interested in purchasing the spikes. This decision is also dependent upon the location of the spike and the type of bird.

Most bird spikes do not harm birds in any way, they only prevent them from landing in areas where they can become harmful to people or property.

Bird spikes come in all different shapes and sizes. The size and shape of the spike is dependent on what type of bird you’re trying to detour. If you are trying to prevent large birds from landing on your property, you’ll want to invest in larger spikes. If you are trying to prevent small birds from landing, you’ll want to use smaller spikes closer together.

Most spikes are available in the following widths of coverage 3”, 5” & 7”. These spikes are usually offered in a variety of colors to match the building where the spikes are to be placed. Bird spikes can be a good investment for someone who is looking to rid themselves of the problems associated with birds landing on buildings and causing unfortunate accidents on the buildings or people below.

Stainless steel bird spikes are available in 6ft, 20ft & 50ft boxes. They usually come in 2ft. sections for easy installation. These spikes are usually installed with screws or adhesive (1 tube of adhesive usually covers 25ft. spike).

In some cases (such as with large birds) it may be more useful to use the metal spikes. If you use small plastic bird spikes it may still be possible for a larger bird to land. However, in most cases the use of bird spikes will work well to prevent birds from landing. Again, these spikes are not designed to harm birds, but rather to prevent them from wanting to land. Most countries outlaw any product designed to intentionally harm birds. This is another reason why it’s a good idea to invest in a product that does the job while still allowing the birds to remain unharmed.

If you are looking for a cost effective, yet humane way to keep birds from roosting in inconvenient areas, bird spikes might be your best bet. Yet the name bird ‘spikes’ might not be the best descriptor for these deterrents, as they won’t be impaling our feathered friends. Rather, bird spikes are simply thin pieces of wire that protrude from a central strip, which will prevent birds from landing in the area in which the strip is placed.

Don’t get the wrong idea though; you don’t have to dislike birds to use a bird control device like bird spikes. While watching and feeding birds can be an incredibly peaceful form of therapy, a entertaining hobby, and a soothing way to pass your day, at times these avian creatures can become a nuisance. Whether they are nesting in your gutters, leaving droppings all over your home, porch, car, or worse, you, or driving you insane with their incessant chirping, squawking, or cooing, you might just not want them in close proximity to your home or place of business. Still, that doesn’t mean you want to do them any harm.

Birds can be incredibly persistent creatures when it comes to their roosting and territorial areas. This doesn’t mean you need to resort to drastic measures though. Rather than using inhumane methods such as noise or scare tactics that can interfere with a bird’s nesting practices, or repellent, poison, or other preventative strategies that might harm the bird or other animals in the process, bird spikes can be an effective means of keeping birds at bay in a more compassionate manner. Bird spikes are also a more permanent method of prevention and insure you can avoid the common issues and problems associated with birds, but avoid the guilt when doing so.

The design of the bird spike makes it perfect for lining ledges, window sills, railings, thin edging over doorways, roof ledges, gutters, awnings, and other areas that are coming nesting or gathering spots for birds. Typically, bird spikes come in small strips (usually sections of one to two feet in length), and can be attached to problem areas by using adhesive or clips. This can make for easy removal after birds have moved on or if the spikes need to be moved to a new location. Ensuring the area in which you plan to use the strips is cleaned from debris before beginning can make for a more secure attachment of the spikes when using adhesive. This will help to avoid elements such as wind, rain, snow, birds, squirrels, and other forces of nature from more easily detaching the spikes.

At times, the areas in which you find birds are causing problems can be dangerous or difficult to access. If this is the case, it may be advisable to contact a handyman to assist with installation or to install the bird spikes for you. It is also important to ensure that other professionals or repair people, such as roofers, gutter or chimney cleaners, window cleaners, etc. are aware of the location of bird spikes. This can avoid workers unknowingly detaching or bending the spikes during the course of their work through the use of ladders, by stepping on them, placing tools and equipment on them, or by other means.
